Billboard End of Year Issue Charts Section Template

Billboard has an end of year issue every year with a mammoth chart section which summarizes the entire year of charts. The creative director wanted a tight template for her team to design from that included space for all the chart entries, but also items to break up chart space so it isn't so visually overwhelming. I designed the template with editorial suggestions of funny items and a new cleaner look for the charts, so that they're easier to read and color-coded to easily identify the different charts. The triangle theme is inspired by the up and down arrows on the Billboard charts. They're used as repeating shapes to tie the entire section together.

Billboard Magazine Redesign

I was asked to help redesign Billboard magazine in 2019. These are preliminary sketches to try out typefaces, colors, and grids. After doing a bit of strategy work, it became clear that the current magazine was feeling a bit too feminine considering the audience is around 60%+ male. There was a lot of research, collecting and testing. One of my ideas for department slugs was to try a modern version of a blackletter typeface. It made sense because the magazine is a music trade publication, but also because it began in the 1800s as a newspaper. I drew a custom blackletter typeface. Another look was inspired by mid-century record covers. After sketching ideas, the project was turned over to Billboard's in-house design team.

Billboard Snapchat Video

Billboard wanted to make a newsy Snapchat video on the week leading up to the Grammys. The video sections were an 80's and 90's inspired mix of hand-made illustrations, photos and layered typography with drawn patterns throughout for maximum pop.

The Nest Magazine Feature

The print version of The Nest magazine was ultra visual and creatively conceptualized. For this story, I came up with the concept and assigned the talented illustrator Chris Rubino to illustrate debt hell in a funny way. He used burning money, iron gates, hooved gargoyles and a cerberus-like character in the artwork.

The Nest Magazine Feature

The concept for this story about the four different sex styles (as determined by editors at The Nest) described the profiles as "The Noble Steed", "The Porn Star", "The Cuddlebug" and "Tarzan". I assigned the talented illustrator Damien Weighill to illustrate the sex styles as animals to make it feel fun and less taboo.
